English Language Tutors

The South Asian University is establishing a Writing Clinic to assist its MA/ LLM / MSc students with their academic English language skills. Applications are invited for a temporary position of English language tutor to establish the Writing Clinic, and perform the following job responsibilities

1) Develop and teach a two semester Academic English syllabus to SAU students. The syllabus should be comprehensive in its coverage of all facets of academic writing, including grammar, syntax, punctuation, composition, crafting essays and presentations, bibliographic referencing, citations etc. Classes will be held once a week on Saturdays, for two hours each.

2) Hold office hours and individual appointments with students, in which students are to be provided individual attention and instruction on their writing on a range of academic assignments, previously submitted for correction.

3) Manage the everyday operations of the Writing Clinic, including scheduling appointments, weekly classes, student progress and evaluation etc.

Required Qualifications

The minimum requirement is a M.A in English / Social Science / Humanities discipline, and university / collegelevel professional experience (minimum five years) in either 1) English language teaching or 2) Academic publishing and editing. Candidates with a background in journalism, or with other kinds of writing/pedagogic experience will also be considered, if they are able to demonstrate a strong familiarity with academic writing conventions. The position involves working with a diverse group of students from a number of different South Asian countries, and a critical qualification for the position includes capacity for innovative pedagogy, a commitment to mentoring students, and excellent interpersonal skills.

Duration of appointment and salary

The appointment will be made from Sept 15, 2013 to May 30, 2014. A consolidated salary would be paid every month and will be commensurate with experience.
